The jackets have uniform fading/discoloration with no additional wear to FotR indicating they have been kept together, darkening to jacket spines, but unclipped with no excessive damage, age/related spotting flaws, tattering to spine ends. Appropriate jackets to the book impressions. Books also above average, no stains or marks. Covers bright as are gilt titles on spine, very slight lean to TT and RotK. The earlier impressions are much more expensive in condition like this making this a more affordable 1st edition set to add to your Tolkien collection. Please ask for addtional photos. Note- Fellowship is the 3rd impression UK sheets, thus strictly speaking there is no 2nd printing of US version of Fellowship of the Rings, but a 3rd printing. For collectors purposes the next publically available copies make makes the next printing, thus a second printing release for each book. All maps nice, overall very good and present well despite various age related flaws. FOTR has slightly more wear than the others, book clean, jacket has some fading to spine, a few closes tears, but as good as they come. RotK 2nd printing VG book and jacket, unclipped, wear to edges of jacket with clear tape on corners and spine ends, book has inscription on ffep, scuffing to cloth on lower edge. no lean, pages tight and bright. This does not detract from the presentation of the book overall which is excellent. These are inscreasingly hard to find and one of the copies needed to complete a serious Hobbit/Tolkien collection. Readers Union, first edition. Surprisingly rare, especially with the dust jackets. A must to complete a full Tolkien collection. These were printed special for Readers Union members only using 1960 UK sheets. Like first edition sets, FoTR has more wear to the book and jacket then the other two titles. FoTR seams have closed tears that have been reinforced with archival tape on the reverse. tattering to corners and spine ends, with paper loss to spine heel. TT and RotK have slight tattering to spine ends and TT a small closed tear to the lower cover. All three have some darkening/fading to jacket spine. Fellowship has been read once, clean, no marks. TT and King appear not to have been read although TT has slight lean, likely from stacking. As good a set as they come and truly rare for having the original jackets.

These particular jacket are brittle and subject to cracking, splitting and chipping so its quite common to find them this way unless they have been repaired/restored. Price clipped, colors bright. Unbound sheets of the 1954, 3rd impression FoTR. These are Allen & Unwin library copy printers proof. Hand written- Checked 29.11.54, copyright page indicates Second impression December 1954, but hand written beneath- Third impression January 1955. Minor corrections in three different style pens. One is likley to be Professor Tolkien's, but there's not enough complete writing to tell properly. Untrimmed edges, various creases, rubbing and bends, well handled but very good overall. Most uniquely, none of the corrections appear in subsequent impressions/ editions except one. Coupled with indication of r-numbering to some of the pages, it appears there were plans for this impression that never came to fruition? A bit of a mystery copy. Please ask for photos.

Highly collectible for those completing a collection of all the boxed sets (see my 1958 and 1962 sets. The box is a little worse for wear, but complete. No stains, box is not split. The books are lovely All three jackets have uniform fading to the spines indicating they've been kept together as a set., none are clipped. FotR jacket has tattering to ends while the other two are lovely but for the fading. FotR has a gift inscription inside end page. TT has a 1' stain on the jacket spine just over the title. RoTK near fine book, no marks, jacket has some light marks on the spine. All book bindings tight and square, gilt titles book spined bright, no stains and foxing. Lovely overall. I have for sale all the box sets 1956-62. Why not buy them all and complete your collection.

Chippings and scuffing to all edges of books, Fellowship has more wear with two small stains on the cover, well read overall lovely. Each title is the first printing in paperback. Extremely rare. Slipcase is in amazingly good condition with no fading and little scuffing, one corner bumped but othewise near fine condtion. An important part of any serious Tolkien collection.
